Spring cleaning your HVAC system in 6 steps
A practical checklist for homeowners between professional visits.
Twenty minutes of spring maintenance protects the most expensive appliance in your home. Here's the order we recommend.
The checklist
1. Replace the air filter and write the date on the frame.
2. Vacuum every supply register and return grille, including the slats.
3. Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit.
4. Pour a cup of warm water and vinegar through the condensate drain line to prevent clogs.
5. Test the thermostat in cooling mode before the first hot week, not during it.
6. Listen for new rattles or squeals — early noises are cheap fixes.
What to leave to a technician
Coil cleaning, blower removal, refrigerant checks, and any interior duct work. Those need proper equipment and containment to avoid pushing debris further into the system.
